One of the most prominent Sufi saints in the world, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, also known as Khwaja Garib Nawaz, is known for his spirituality, sacrifice, and love for God.

His shrine, the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, located in Ajmer, India, attracts millions of pilgrims from all over the globe. The story of Khwaja Garib Nawaz is one of profound faith, personal metamorphosis, and the legacy of his lessons. Here, we talk about his path, succession as Khalifa, and the prominent yet unassuming role of his most reticent student–Khwaja Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki.

The Early Meeting: Khwaja Moinuddin and Khwaja Qutubuddin

Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti encountered an extraordinarily talented young spiritual seeker, a 14-year-old boy from Asfahan named Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Awashi, in the year 583 AH. During that period, Qutubuddin sought a Murshid who would resonate with his zeal and devotion. He thought about Sheikh Mohammed Asfahani, but he was destined to meet Khwaja Gharib Nawaz, who immediately saw a spark of greatness in the boy.

Khwaja Moinuddin made Qutubuddin his Mureed (disciple). In 586 AH, when Qutubuddin was 17 years old, he was made Khalifa (spiritual successor) by Gareeb Nawaz to fulfil a prophecy divinely revealed to the Holy Prophet of Islam. Qutubuddin was phenomenal; he memorized half the Holy Quran while still in his mother's womb.

Khwaja Muinuddin's Pilgrimage: Visits to Makkah and Madina

Khwaja Moinuddin's spiritual journey took him to sacred places, including Makkah and Madina, where he performed Haj and devoted long hours. During one of these meditations in Mecca, Khwaja Moinuddin heard a divine voice saying, “O Moinuddin, we are pleased with you; you may ask anything you like.” In response, Khawaja Moinuddeen prayed for the forgiveness and guidance of his disciples, the Mureeds in his Silsila (spiritual lineage).

Following the sacred communion, Khwaja Moinuddin proceeded to Medina, where the Holy Prophet received a Basharat (prophetic dream), instructing him to head towards India. The Holy Prophet stated, "Go to Ajmer. Your presence shall extinguish darkness and grace it with Islam's brilliance." Such guidance Moinuddin received would shape his life and his impact on India.

The Spiritual Voyage: Successor of Khwaja Moinuddin and The Journey to India

Based on the directives he received, Khawaja Ghareeb Nawaz remained true to his spirits and continued his travels, meeting Sheikh Abul Hasan Khirqani and Sheikh Naasiruddin Astrabadi, whose teachings and philosophies left an imprint on him. In Herat and Sabzawar, he performed miracle after miracle, earning undeserved praise for his wisdom and incredible power.

One event that stands out from this period was in Herat when Khwaja Moinuddin encountered a brutally wicked governor named Yadgar Mohammed who was outright hostile towards Khwaja Moinuddin. The governor, however, after a spiritual encounter with the Khwaja, chose to express regret for his wrongdoings and blessed Shariah and Khawaja Moinuddin, turning him into an ardent follower.

Khwaja Moinuddin’s Life History

Khwaja Moinuddin was a perceptive scholar who made significant strides in social activities. His fame is widespread throughout the Indian subcontinent. This guided him to social activities. In 587 AH (1191 AD), Khwaja Moinuddin entered India, passing through Multan Lahore and Samanna. He moved to Delhi later on. He witnessed numerous miracles and converts which affirmed his spot as the property of an Indian escape until his death.

A Miraculous Journey

Simultaneously with the travels of Khwaja Moinuddin, Delhi's political state was on the verge of collapse. The Shock of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni resulted in chaos, with both Shahubdin Ghauri and his brother Ghiyasuddin Ghaur trying to take the crown. In spite of facing hostility from Muslims and being trapped in a blood-heated kettle, Khwaja Moinuddin faced no issue entering Delhi.

When he was entering Delhi, there was always a chance of meeting trouble, and the local authorities wanted nothing more than to get rid of him. Regardless, the overwhelming presence of Khwaja Moinuddin poured magic and, in this case, courage radiated on everyone nearby him. Many of the populace who suspected him are influenced and changed their religion to Islam. This is one of Khwaja Moinuddin's first miracles in India, where the power of bias was transformed into Allah’s sufficiency.

The Apostasy of Raja Prithviraj Chauhan's Court

Khwaja Moinuddin’s entry into Delhi has a backstory, which is a prophecy from Raja Prithviraj Chauhan’s mother. Twelve years prior to Khwaja Moinuddin’s arrival, she warned her son, a Northern fakir, would come to the kingdom and, if not respected, would ruin it. The Raja's spies recognized him, so they tried to kill him, but Khwaja Moinuddin was divinely protected.

As Khwaja Moinuddin progressed towards Ajmer, he headed towards greener pastures, but the tensions surrounding him did not ease.

Nevertheless, his unmoving faith and fight to spread Islam surpassed every objection. His entrance into Delhi stood as his landmark owing to the fact that many people, including royals, embraced Islam.

Khwaja Moinuddin’s final stop was Ajmer, where he founded the referred Ajmer Sharif Dargah. His coming to Ajmer was the light of Islam, and his presence in Ajmer banished the darkness. Its Qutb, Khwaja Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki, aided greatly in carrying out Khwaja Moinuddin’s spiritual work in India.

Moinuddin’s lessons on love, compassion, and devotion to God still impact millions to this day. His Dargah in Ajmer stands as a monument of oneness, faith, and tranquillity, drawing pilgrims of all religions to worship.
